Abdominal Ultrasound

Sonographers, specialists in internal medicine, radiologists, professionals trained for these procedures, perform abdominal ultrasound examinations. Ultrasound allows examine organs inside the abdomen and pelvis including the liver, gallbladder, spleen, pancreas, adrenal glands, bladder, and kidneys. The blood vessels that lead to some of these organs can also be looked at with Doppler imaging and the blood flow inside blood vessels can be evaluated as well (for example, to look for renal artery stenosis). Most of the time, people are asked not to eat or drink for several hours before the examination. The patient will be lying down for the procedure and will need to change position so that the sonagrapher can look at different areas. The patient may also need to hold your breath for short periods during the exam. An abdominal ultrasound can find the cause of abdominal pain and kidney infections. It can diagnose a hernia, monitor tumors, and cancer, or treat ascites. It can image the abdominal organs and learn why there is swelling. It can look for internal damage after an injury. A common cause for abdominal pain is stones in the gall bladder, obstructed bile duct or kidney and bladder stones.
